About us
It is no secret that brands often sacrifice human or animal wellness along with valuable nature resources for the sake of having higher profit margins. At will by Zac we strongly believe in honest and fair work, therefore we'd like to introduce you to the following ethics and sustainability standards that we truly take a stance for:
Fair Manufacturing
Our artisans work 6 to 8 hours a day, with many who live in remote, rural areas who have moved to nearby rented housing. We spend time on the ground in the countries where our products to fabrics are made to ensure the highest standards of safety and fair, empowering treatment for all makers.
Safe and non-hazardous working conditions are ensured and provided to all our employees. Race, color, gender or religious discrimination is highly intolerable and unacceptable in our working environment.
Slow fashion
Buying less items could reduce impact on nature by a long shot. We encourage our customers to reap the benefits by possessing fewer yet higher quality articles of clothing. High-quality clothing items offer durability and sustainability, hence these clothes will serve you for as long as you need it.
Living wages
We invest in the people behind our products. We understand that families depend on this income in order to meet basic needs. Being paid fairly & promptly means our employees can pay for housing and food, childcare and health care. It means our artisans can support themselves and their families. A fair wage means dignity and opportunity.
Inclusive sizing and customizability
Will by Zac strongly believes in beauty having no size, number or scale. Beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder. Nevertheless, no matter your size, color, race or where you're from we invite you to celebrate and foster your beauty together with us.
Local manufacturing
All our garments are hand-made in Sri Lanka. We run a small operation with the workforce of 15-18 employees. Our linen is sourced from Taiwan and China who produce ethical linen fabrics.
A note from Jennifer
In 2020, I started Will by Zac for a very personal reason: Isaac. My 3yr old son at the time was inspired to save the ocean creatures. And pushed me to act on how he felt. Being an educator at the time and already having a successful preschool running I decided to take on the challenge of starting up a clothing brand with no prior experience but driven by shear passion and commitment to contribute to change in the fashion industry in Sri Lanka. Design continues to drive our business. I believe that good design is the result of paying attention to what women want and need. There’s a magic that happens when you put on a piece of clothing that’s been pared to its simple, pure essence. It comes alive on your body. It makes you move differently. It changes the way you feel about yourself.
And that was just the beginning of a rewarding roller coaster ride. I still wake up every morning, thinking of I can be the change rather than a business strategy that will bring more revenue. And that is how I would measure our success.
Made by Women
We are proud to support women artisans, This is why we exist, and it drives everything we do.
And while we genuinely love to support other women, we also know from research and experience that women are the key to eradicating global poverty. Women comprise more than three-quarters of our workforce, and the effect is exponential. When women are empowered to earn an income, they reinvest 90 percent of that income back into health, education, food, children and their communities, compared to 30 percent for their male counterparts.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS
For too long, the fashion industry has been one of the world’s leading polluters and consumers of water.
We never use synthetic fibers, which are made from plastic and do not biodegrade even in landfills. Nearly all of our products are made with 100% linen or Linen Cotton blended fabrics. We use the waste fabric to produce low consumption garments that otherwise would have ended up in landfills.
Sustainable origins of linen
Linen in itself is a natural fiber made from the flax plant, which is a renewable resource that grows even in poor-quality soil and usually does not require any chemical pesticides. Linen production uses the whole flax plant, leaving no waste. It is fully biodegradable and can be easily recycled, making it one of the most sustainable fabrics in the world.
Made-To-Order concept
Overstocking is a problem that creates a lot of unnecessary waste in the retail and textile industries. To address it, we have introduced a made to order concept. It means that we only stock the products that are in higher demand at a particular time.
Recycling and zero waste
With our own in-house production facility we have direct control over the production processes, and sorting and recycling are the highest priority. For us, the main sustainability goal is minimizing our waste by repurposing most of the textile leftovers and using them to create smaller items, e.g. crop tops and shorts
Community support
While caring for the environment, Will by Zac also continuously supports local communities. Whether with our products, the help of our team members, or other resources, we regularly take time to support people in need.
BATIK
HONORING LOCAL CRAFTSMANSHIP
The word batik means “wax painting”. And this was originally introduced to ted in Indonesia and was introduced to Sri Lanka by the Dutch. But the batik industry in Sri Lanka has developed into a unique form of textile art exclusive to the country.
Sri Lanka has a rich culture of traditional handicrafts. Many of these art forms are in decline and in danger of being lost due to inflation or inadequate funds to run the once family owned business s or tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
As a predominantly women-led sector, the impact would be devastating leaving many communities without employment. While providing them the opportunity to develop and perfect their skills. We strive to raise the profile of these age-old crafts, guaranteeing their future.
